Phoenix weather: Warm temps continue

PHOENIX -- A pretty stable weather phoenix pattern continues to bring warm and dry weather to Arizona.

On Thursday, we had a fair amount of high cloudiness, but we're expecting much of that to clear out for the weekend.

Even so, a weak weather disturbance will cross Northern Arizona Saturday night and bring a few isolated showers to the state.

In the Valley, that disturbance will drop temperatures a couple of degrees.

Still, we're forecasting highs to remain in the 80s through much of next week.

GDC 2014: Another Look at 'Drifter'

<Discountp>Drifter is a game we've been looking at since GDC 2012, following a successful Kickstarter and Steam Green Light campaign, the game is closer than ever to being done. The developers are still solidly in "When it's done" mode, but they're thinking it'll be done later this year. With so much talk of the PC version, it's neat to see the iOS version actually running:

The trick with games like Drifter is that you do so much in them it's hard to just show what the game does in a quick ten minute demo. Regardless, as someone who loves space traders, I can't wait for this one.

'Scandal' Season 3, episode 13: Jake breaks bad in the worst way in 'No Sun on the Horizon'

scandal season 2-season-3-episode-13-abc.jpg">Boy, those ads promising the most OMG of Season 3 within the last 30 seconds of Thursday's (March 13) episode of "Scandal" weren't lying, were they?

While the big moment wasn't exactly as OMG as Fitz taking a bullet to the head or Olivia's "Dad?" in Season 2, the resolution of everyone's quest to keep Sally Langston's murderous secret under wraps did manage to take us to quite a shocking place. (It should go without saying but if you'd like to avoid spoilers from the big episode, you know, leave now.)

Spurned by Olivia for the last time and tasked by Cyrus as the new head of B613 to keep the Sally scandal from ever getting out, Jake broke. He broke bad. While it looked like he might just have Sally herself offed -- something that was prevented only by Fitz throwing an important debate --the new Command took his duties one step further.

In those final moments, he arranged for the Publius brain trust (including David, James and those two poor women whose names I never cared to learn) to meet in a dark alley. Then he turned his gun on them. He dispatched of the nameless ladies quickly and then turned his aim to a third victim, fired and -- cut to black.

So, who do we think ate that third bullet and who was being forced into B613 against their will (if those intercut scenes of Jake talking under that blue light are to be understood as him forcing the forth into employment after his murder spree)? With Josh Malina a series regular and Dan Bucatinsky just a recurring guest star, our money is on James getting shot (whether whoever got shot dies at all remains to be seen). There's more dramatic potential in James' possible death, what with Cyrus finding the bugged frame and actually apologizing to James, rather than just killing him himself.

And with David the show's only real, pure white good guy, him turning B613 to stay alive is so delicious I can barely stand it.

Is it next week yet?

Spare Parts:

- Unhinged Sally Langston was terrifying and loads of fun. A show like "Scandal" needs one mentally broken religious fanatic in its ranks, doesn't it? It just feels so right.

- When Liv finds out what Jake's done, she's going to lose it, right? And just after he begged her to run away with him and "save him." Jake knew this was an inevitability, but Liv had to go and choose Fitz over him. Really, this is all Liv's fault. (Okay, not really, but, you know...)

- Also culpable in Jake breaking bad? Quinn and her fire-breathing when it comes to Liv. I'm starting to think we'll never see Huckleberry Quinn back together again.

- Um, where was Harrison tonight? Did Adnan keep him in bed the whole time? Yeesh.

- As Cyrus, Jeff Perry found so many ways to say the word "murderer" this week that he's basically owed an Emmy just for that alone. Glory be to Jeff Perry.

- "You shouldn't have to pay for my mistakes, James. Do whatever you want with me. With us. I'm in your hands. Just know I am so very sorry. And I love you. I love you, James. More than anything. I love you."

If James is dead, Jake better watch out. Cyrus is not going to just accept that, no sir.

- Liv: "There is no clean. Just like there is no Vermont ... Let's stop pretending. Let's just be here." No, Liv. No. This toxic relationship must end. It just must

- David: "What would Olivia Pope do? Someone really needs to put that on a bracelet." Amen.

Seven Questions on Software Security for Veracode's Chris Wysopal

When you think about all the high-profile hacking attacks that have occurred in the last several years, you might be surprised to learn that making software secure before it's in use isn't always a high priority for the companies that make it.

Hackers can go after a lot of things to get what they want. Make a server hard to hack, they'll go after the network. Harden the network, they'll then go after something else.

Lately that something else has been software applications. They might be small applications that run on the Web or mobile apps that run on a smartphone.

Companies are moving so fast to launch Web apps and mobile apps that they often don't bother to think much about security, assuming that the people writing the code know what they're doing. That's not always the case.

At the recent RSA Conference in San Francisco, I talked with Chris Wysopal, the CTO of Veracode. Based in Burlington, Mass., Veracode helps software developers bake security into the apps they create so that they're less likely to have to go back and fix things later after a vulnerability has been found, or worse, after an attack.

If his name sounds familiar, it's because he's the same Chris Wysopal who years ago was better known as Weld Pond, a member of the respected hacker think tank known as L0pht Heavy Industries. Its seven members famously testified before Congress in 1998 that with their accumulated knowledge they could " bring down the entire Internet in 30 minutes." Another L0pht member was Peter Zatko, better known as Mudge, who recently left DARPA, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Defense for a job at Google.

The next year several L0pht members went on to start @Stake, a security consulting firm that they sold to Symantec in 2004.

Wysopal founded Veracode with another L0pht member - Christien Rioux, aka DilDog - in 2006. Since then the company has raised about $74 million in five rounds of venture capital funding from investors including Meritech Capital Partners, Atlas Ventures, .406 Ventures, StarVest Partners, Rovi, and Symantec. It has been growing by about 50 percent a year since then.

Here's a little of what we talked about.

Re/code: Chris I think the fact that Veracode exists is kind of surprising. With all the hacking attacks we've experienced over the years, the notion that building software to be secure the first time seems obvious and yet, here's Veracode and it's a relatively new company. What is it about securing applications that's so hard?

Wysopal: It's funny, I was just on a panel about whether or not companies who buy software should require security testing of the vendors they buy software from. There were people from Microsoft and EMC - two of the biggest software companies in the world - arguing that they don't want testing, and one person representing the views of the utility industry, which buys a lot of software. Basically the vendors don't want to be tested, because they know they'll find problems and they'll have to fix them, but it doesn't mean that the software is good or bad. I came up with the analogy of going to the skin doctor to check for cancerous lesions. If you have them it doesn't mean that your overall health is good or bad, it just means you have a lesion and you have to do something about it. ... But I can understand why the vendors don't want it because it slows down the sales process.

So where are you seeing this kind of testing put into place?

Financial companies. The FS-ISAC, the security group for the financial industry, and which I think is one of the best of the security user groups, it came out in December with two new recommendations: One was to ask vendors about their security process and the level of training of their developers. And the other was to conduct static binary analysis testing on the software, which is to say test it for security glitches before you use it. The two go hand-in-hand and that's the process we're pushing for. The financial industry led the way with application security, and I think health care will be next, given the push for electronic medical records and to automate processes and all the little companies popping up to do that.

So what's the big security trend you're seeing right now?

People are trying to move faster and faster to deploy technology. They see it as a way to grow and reduce friction in their business. Marc Andreessen says that software is eating the world. And so not only do we have startups disrupting the traditional players like WhatsApp disrupting the telco industry, but we're seeing similar disruptions coming in financial services and health care from software, either from new companies or established ones building it themselves or buying it. And what they're doing is different from before: Mobile apps and cloud apps and consumer-facing Web apps. All of this stuff increases the risk because it's completely distributed over the Web, and the apps talk to each other and they touch sen sitive data. My job is to keep them from being reckless. A startup company can be reckless. They start out with no security policy and end up with 100 million users, and then realize too late they have big security holes. A bank can't do that.

So what's the answer?

You have to bake security into the way you're building the software. You can't build it and then test for security and then go back and redo the software. Writing it secure the first time is faster. So our customers are measuring the code they get from their outsourced developers, and they're seeing that the code that comes in clean gets deployed faster, and so they send more work to the companies who do that. If there's the right kind of testing done along the way, there's an incentive to build better software. What we're trying to do at Veracode is make it easy.

Are you on the lookout for any new kinds of threats and vulnerabilities?

The threats don't really change that much, at least not the traditional ones. Basically attackers figure out new way to exploit how businesses run their infrastructure. What we've realized is that the way that organizations are deploying technology is really out of control right now. And there's a lot of websites out there collecting customer information that the CIO or CISO doesn't even know about. A bank may have a Super Sale site with their names on them, but which the bank didn't build and which nevertheless collects sensitive data. I talked to one CISO from a major company who said that all the breaches that hurt his company's brand and put them at legal risk came through a third-party site with the company's name on it that they didn't know about. A CISO for a major compan y told me exactly that.

Can you get ahead of the attackers?

You can, before the attacks begin. We did do this with one company around the time of the LulzSec attacks. There had been some chatter picked up by law enforcement agencies that this company was going to be the next target, the next Sony. It was a very large global manufacturing company. They came to us and said they didn't even know how many websites they had. They had done so many M&A transactions and had so many products, they had no idea. ... They gave us a list of domain names and IP address they controlled, and we scanned all their apps and sites for problems. We scanned 8,000 applications in two weeks. We found hundreds of vulnerabilities which they fixed. But they were able to avoid being the next Sony.

What about software-as-a-service applications? What does that shift mean for your clients?

We're a SAAS company ourselves. Our customers, especially the financial services ones, hold us accountable the same way they would their own infrastructure. Since we're a small growing company we use cloud applications for human resources for payroll and things like that. We ask our vendors if they've been audited for different things and they have to show us. Have they had a manual penetration test? What's their security program like? It's easy. You hold your service providers to the same level to which you would hold yourself.

Is It Worth It?: Longevity is king with the Yoga 10, a big tablet with a comparatively impressive battery life - it can purportedly go as long as 18 hours before needing a recharge. Calling the iPad Air's hardware "close to perfect," The Verge's reviewer said "the iPad Air represents a nearly ideal manifestation of what a large tablet can and should be." Right now you can score this tablet for just $450, a price low by $45.

Dispute over agency in Kiryas Joel expansion plan stalling deal

ORANGE COUNTY - An ongoing dispute in Orange County is stalling a controversial land Buy Cheap to double the size of the Hassidic community of Kiryas Joel.

Three agencies are fighting to spearhead a study on the impacts of the plan, but the Department of Environmental Conservation has yet to make a decision. So far, Kiryas Joel has applied for lead agency, as well as the Town of Monroe and the Monroe-Woodbury School District.

The proposal, and Kiryas Joel's involvement, is highly criticized by some who say the town board isn't trustworthy because they were voted in by Kiryas Joel's block vote.

Read More: Hudson Valley Top Stories

The concern is that the deal will lower property values in town and overcrowd the area with high-density housing.

The impact on property and school taxes are also a concern, with the county reporting that the tiny village of Kiryas Joel receives almost as many social services as the cities of Middletown and Newburgh.

The issue has prompted local leaders like Assemblyman James Skoufis to respond in writing to the state, requesting a second look be taken at who is appointed lead agency. County Executive Steve Neuhaus has promised in writing to oversee the process regardless of who is chosen.

The DEC was expected to make a decision at the Monroe Town Board meeting on Monday night but has now said it could take weeks to come to an answer.

Deal of the Day: Sony QX10 Detachable Smartphone Lens on Sale for $184.99

We know that not every phone released has an awesome camera, as not every company has the resources to throw in huge sensors to bump the price of their products. Sony's answer to the problem is to let everyone take advantage of their camera technology via the QX-line of detachable smartphone lenses. Last year, they released the QX-100 and QX-10 lens, which are attachable to almost any smartphone that is currently available for purchase.

Via WiFi and NFC, the smartphone and the lens communicate to each other, with the smartphone acting as the lens' viewfinder. The device features a 18.9MP sensor, 10x optical zoom, OIS, Sony's BIONZ image processor, and weighs in at just 3.17 ounces.

Today, for a limited time on 1sale.com, you can pick up Sony's QX-10 model for just $184.99, 27% lower than the list price of $249.99 on Amazon. While the QX-10 doesn't have as many features as its big brother the QX-100 (retailing for nearly $500), it's still a good way to beef up your phone's photography output.

Better yet, the units are brand new from factory, and also come with a 1 year warranty. No refurbished janky nonsense to be seen here.

The Emerging Radioshack/Netflix Debacle

On Sunday, February 23rd, Radioshack began a promotion to make it possible for anyone who bought a laptop, tablet, or cellphone to receive a code good for 6 months of Netflix online streaming service. The deal can be found on their website. However, not all is well in promotion land. Since the promotion period began there have been cancelled orders, widespread theft, and generally more questions than answers. To fully explain, it will help to start at the beginning.

Radioshack announced this deal last week, and it was to begin Sunday that any online or in store purchase of a laptop, tablet, or phone would result in a code being emailed or printed on receipt. That code would be entered at another redemption site, which would then generate a code that could be redeemed on Netflix for 6 months of services (around a $48 value). The issues all began with the first redemption process.

Initially the redemption site, The Deal Now Card, had to send out notices that Netflix codes would be sent out within two days. This would be fine except that some savvy (or scummy, depending on your interpretation) internet users found a way to manipulate the redemption process.

Users on slickdeals, a deal finding and sometimes deal exploiting website, found that the URL of the redemption website could be changed upon trying to enter a code, resulting in a valid Netflix subscription code being generated. Within hours, many of Netflix codes that were allocated to this promotion were stolen and some were redeemed or put up for sale on Ebay.

This means that those with legally obtained codes could either be receiving an already redeemed code, or they might not receive a code at all. To make matters worse, Radioshack has declined to respond as of Tuesday afternoon. The only change has been an update to the terms of service, requiring a higher purchase amount, for receiving a Netflix code that has likely already been used.

Who is to blame for this issue? Radioshack certainly could have benefited from employing a more sound delivery system for the promotional codes. Utilizing a shell of a website that initially cracked under traffic, then was so easily manipulated, while making the goods so easy to steal, certainly doesn't bode well for their online marketing decision making.

Plenty of blame can also fall on the redemption website designers. Getting the trust of a large company such as Radioshack usually means that the job will be taken seriously, rather than having a major promotion be handle by as they put it "a website design in process".

Some blame can be put on the Slickdeals users who decided to exploit the website error. By trying to exploit the deal, exploiting it, and then sharing the exploit with others in the name of building their online reputation, they likely ruined a good promotion that others could have benefited from. I am a fan of deal websites, but when scoring a good deal becomes an exercise in manipulation and theft, it is no longer what I would consider a slick deal.

Radioshack has not addressed these issues yet. A press release to give some indication if the thousands of customers who tried to correctly participate in this promotion will be receiving what they were promised will hopefully be coming soon. Until then, I am back to paying 8 bucks a month for my online streaming needs.

Airfare Expert: Best deals on summer flights

<On Salesp>There's still a lot of snow out there, but it's not a moment too soon to start thinking about flights for your summer trips. Here are some items to add to your vacation planning to-do list and dates to keep in mind.

All travelers

Strategize: Begin mapping out when and where you want to go.

  • Finalize vacation dates: Talk to your boss now about taking days off. If you can begin or end your trip on a midweek day - or better still, on both ends - you will save money over the usual depart-on-Friday, return-home-Monday itinerary.
  • Plan your route: Fly in and out of the biggest airports near your departure city and destination. Smaller airports, even mid-sized ones, will almost always cost more.
  • Consider delaying vacation: Waiting until late August can save money if you don't have to consider children's school calendars. Note: Autumn starts a little late this year (Sept. 23) so it may seem like summer lingers longer.
Early-bird travelers

Start shopping: Remember, Memorial Day is Monday, May 26.

  • Book now: If you plan to get away Memorial Day weekend or begin travel in early June, now is the time to start booking flights.
  • Date to remember: If you can complete travel by June 7 (or at least begin your trip before then), you will save on longer flights like coast-to-coast trips.
Peak-season travelers

Start shopping in early April for July travel and beyond

  • Miles: If you'll travel in peak season, it may pay to use miles for your ticket (or to buy or borrow some). Check with the FlyerTalk community for the latest deals and strategies.
  • Look for cheaper destinations: A good way to do this is by checking out current airline sales to see which destinations are cheapest from your city; the deals won't be as good in July but you'll know which routes offer better value.
  • Cutting costs: Try shaving airfare costs by traveling on red-eyes, or taking connecting flights instead of non-stops (but compare prices of both flights to be sure one is cheaper than the other).
For Europe travelers

Finish shopping: Higher rates kick in May 16.

  • Cheap cities: London, Paris and Rome always make the 'most popular' lists which is why they're always more expensive. Look at cheaper alternatives such as Dublin, Frankfurt, Zurich or cities in Spain or Scandinavia.
  • Cut costs to expensive cities: If you have your heart set on one of the big three, consider flying to Dublin and catching one of Europe's many discount carriers for the final leg of your journey, such as JetStar or Ryanair. Review the fee policies of these airlines carefully, though - the baggage charges can be killer.
  • Delays can pay: Consider postponing summer vacation until late August when airfare to Europe drops back to pre-summer prices.

Know Which Online Retailers Offer Coupons Via Live Chat

S

Can't find a coupon code anywhere? With the growing "live chat" customer service trend, many operators are trained to hand out Discount to polite shoppers that simply ask. I did the research and found a dozen of the most popular retailers that'll hand out a code via live chat to shoppers who play their cards right.

This post originally appeared on Rather Be Shopping.

Here is what I discovered (in alphabetical order):

Bass Pro Shops

One popular online store that readily hands out coupons via live chat is BassProShops.com, which is a huge shopping destination for hunters, fishermen, and outdoors-men. If you can't find a coupon the traditional way, be sure to pull up a live chat session and politely see if they have a coupon code up their sleeves. A few tips:

  • Always be polite and courteous when asking for a coupon since your words are all you have when trying to score an online discount.
  • [Customer service agent] Debi immediately hooked me up with a coupon code good for free shipping on my entire order. This coupon did exclude boats, but luckily I'm not in the market for a new boat!
  • If live chat fails to bring you a coupon at Bass Pro Shops make sure to check out their Facebook page as they have currently have a couple coupons posted on their wall.

Birthday Express and Celebrate Express

If you're in the planning mode for your child's next birthday party or any other big shindig, be sure to hit up a live chat operator for a coupon at Celebrate Express.com or Birthday Express.com. Here's the skinny:

  • Both websites use the same coupon codes so you can start the live chat feature from either site and the codes will work on both.
  • Leslie hooked me up immediately with a coupon code good for 15% off your $75+ regular-priced merchandise total. Not a great coupon but certainly handy for larger purchases.

Dress Barn

For those who love to shop for bargains at DressBarn.com you're going to want to get well acquainted with their live chat feature. Here are a few tips:

  • I got the impression that my operator, Laurel, had a big list of coupon codes at her disposal. I say this because she said "Try PRES14″ as if she had other codes up her sleeve if for some reason it didn't work.
  • So if you're buying more than one item, or any sale items, ask the Dress Barn operator for a coupon that better fits your online order. I think you'll be happily surprised with the results.

Eastbay

For those of you not familiar with Eastbay.com, they sell athletic footwear, apparel, and training equipment. They are known for their amazing selection but tend to also be on the expensive side so you'll always want to shop with an Eastbay coupon code. Here is how I scored one from live chat:

  • I was having trouble viewing their website and asked my operator, Dan, if they had any current coupons. He told me they did and it was viewable during step four of the checkout process.
  • I told him I couldn't see it on the website and he was able to tell me the coupon code needed to collect 20% off.
  • This is a good strategy for any website you're having trouble using as many retailers will give you a coupon for your inconvenience.

Footlocker

I can only assume that the Foot Locker live chat operators are sitting at their desk wearing a stripped ref shirt with a whistle around their neck.

  • My Foot Locker live chat buddy, Aaron, hooked me up with a free shipping on $75 or more coupon code. Not great, but if you shop regularly at Foot Locker you already know that most of their shoes are priced above $75.
  • I tried to get something better out of Aaron, like 20% off, but he did not have another coupon for me. He said that later in the month he'd have a 20% off coupon, but nothing right now.
  • I asked him if better Footlocker coupons typically come out later in the month and he confirmed this to be true.

Home Depot

Next, I hit up Jen via live chat at The Home Depot.com and asked her for a coupon code. She was unable to provide one but she did offer a pretty cool service that is worth sharing.

  • I told her I was doing a kitchen remodel and looking for a coupon for a new dishwasher. The washer was already on sale for close to 25% off and no additional savings were available but she was incredibly familiar with the washer and was able to answer all my questions. Very handy if you are doing a big remodel and have a bunch of questions.
  • Jen was by far the most helpful live chat operator I have ever talked to in terms of product knowledge. Well done Home Depot.

J.Jill

I was really impressed with the live chat operator at J.Jill.com, who ironically was also named Jill. I wonder if they only hire gals named Jill? But anyways, she really went beyond the call of duty.

  • First, Jill hooked me up with a free shipping coupon and then she dropped the 411 on where to find the best deals. She told me J.Jill was offering their entire "Sale and Outlet" section for an additional 30% off for a limited time. No code needed.
  • I love when live chat operators tell me where they most savings can be found on that particular day.
  • Also be sure to follow J.Jill on Twitter as they are known for dropping exclusive coupons on their feed on a weekly basis.

L.L.Bean

L.L.Bean is known for their quality clothing and outstanding customer service that includes a 100% satisfaction guarantee. These days they always offer free shipping on your purchase but rarely have other coupons. Your chances increase greatly if you use their live chat feature as they want you to finalize your purchase today. Here's the best strategy:

  • Be polite, maybe even compliment them on how happy you have been with prior L.L.Bean purchases. In other words, butter them up a little then ask for a coupon to help you save a little money today.
  • I was able to get a 10% off coupon code to apply to my purchase. Not huge savings, but well worth the few minutes it took to get my discount.

Lands' End

There is little doubt the live chat feature at Lands' End will pay off for you in one way or another. Here is the direct link to a Lands' End live chat operator. Here is your best strategy for savings:

  • By being polite and direct I was able to score an online coupon for 30% off all merchandise with free shipping on $50 or more.
  • Lori, my live chat operator, was very receptive to helping me save some money and she had excellent knowledge of Lands' End sizing and styles which was a very nice bonus.
  • If you can't find a Lands' End coupon always open up a live chat session and politely ask for one. Chance of success: 95% at the very least.

Office Depot

I opened up an Office Depot live chat session I was not very confident that I would get a coupon code as they can be pretty tight about handing them out. But my buddy Bobbi delivered the goods. Here is your best strategy:

  • I simply asked for a $10 off $50 or more coupon and was given it right out of the box, next time I will amp it up and ask for a 20% off coupon. I got nothing to lose.
  • Also, it is worth noting that over the years I have received tips that the Office Depot Facebook page is also a great resource to score a coupon when 'Live Chat' doesn't deliver the goods.

Shutterfly

I was really impressed with the customer service Shutterfly.com live chat employee "Sweety" gave me. Here is how it went down:

  • After I asked her if she had any coupons I could use, she asked me to make sure my order was in my virtual shopping cart so she could take a look at it and find the best coupon for me. Pretty cool.
  • After I placed my photo-book in my cart, she took a look at it and came back with the very generous offer of a $10 credit on my photo-book on top of the 25% off site-wide offer Shutterfly was already offering.
  • Tip: Make sure you add the maximum number of stuff you want to order in your cart, open a live chat session and start negotiating the best coupon you can get.

Snapfish

For those of you not familiar with Snapfish, similar to Shutterfly, they specialize in taking your photos and turning them into amazing prints, gifts, and cool books and calendars. Your order total can add up pretty quickly so be sure to hit up the Snapfish live chat feature and ask for a coupon code.

  • I simply asked for a coupon code, nothing specific, and my buddy "Shashank" hooked me up with a 30% off coupon. I couldn't help but think of Morgan Freeman as I collected my savings.
  • They typically allow you to stack coupons so feel free to politely ask for a free shipping coupon as well. They often have a free shipping coupon on $25 or more.

Have you had any success scoring a coupon code at other online retailers using their live chat feature? Let us know in the discussion below.

'I have a ... deal'? How retail hijacked MLK Day

<Reviewimg src="http://ei.marketwatch.com/Multimedia/2014/01/17/Photos/MG/MW-BS804_mlk_20_20140117092054_MG.jpg?uuid=9da35528-7f82-11e3-ac9f-00212803fad6">

As America marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day this Monday, it will be a time for many to pause and consider the life and legacy of the late civic-rights leader. But for retailers, party promoters and others, it will be a time to cash in - often in a way that critics say is at odds with King's message of peace, faith and unity.

Already, many stores and brands are touting discounts connected to the holiday, from a luggage sale at Samsonite.com (shoppers are advised to use the promo code MLKOFFER) to a buy-one-get-one-free offer at clothing retailer Delias.com (promo code MLKFREE). And nightclubs are hosting holiday bashes, often using Photoshopped images of King (think the civil-rights leader as a gold chain-sporting DJ) in their promotional materials.

Topping it off: Hennessy, a cognac brand that's popular in the African-American community (Ebony magazine dubbed it the "unofficial official spirit of Black America"), suggested Martin Luther King Jr. Day cocktail ideas (or "Drinks MLK Jr. Would Be Proud Of"). A publicity firm representing the brand sent out an email offering recipes for such sips as the "Introspective Moment" and the "Privateer," both made with Hennessy, that "are perfect for any indoor gathering to celebrate Dr. King's life."

To say the least, many civil-rights activists, including those connected with Dr. King's family, have not been pleased with such promotions.

"We do try to discourage that as much as we can," said Steve Klein, a spokesman for the Atlanta-based King Center, which was established by King's widow, Coretta Scott King, as a memorial and educational institution.

At the same time, retail and marketing experts say the trend is not unexpected: Just as other dates on the calendar have lost some of their original meaning over time - think Thanksgiving sales that now start before the turkey is even out of the oven - it was only a matter of time before King Day became a selling opportunity. Even Steve Klein of the King Center agreed: "In the United States, holidays do get commercialized," he said, though he added that Martin Luther King Day has also become a platform for community service - to the point that "we feel like the high tone dwarfs the crass commercialism."

In some cases, the commercialization has been greeted with a certain skepticism, if not comical indignation (consider this " Colbert Report " take). In other cases, it's been subject to considerable backlash: When word got out this year about a " Freedom 2 Twerk Martin Luther King Day Weekend Party " in Flint, Mich., a public uproar ensued, and the owner of the party space canceled the event.

Similarly, Hennessy has already distanced itself from the Dr. King Day cocktail pitch it sent out on Wednesday. "Hennessy deeply regrets the release of this ... inappropriate media communication," said brand spokesperson Lily Rougeot in an email on Thursday. "The tone and content of the communication are contrary to the core values of Hennessy. We are reviewing the incident to make sure that mistakes like this do not happen in the future."

It's difficult to estimate just how significant a marketing and merchandising bonanza King Day, established as a federal holiday in 1986, has become. The National Retail Federation doesn't track its sales figures, as it does with other key holiday shopping periods. But Jamie Catmull, a spokesperson for the financial site GoBankingRates.com, said that "year after year we see more stores and institutions doing something."

Still, as Catmull added, it's a bit of a tightrope act, since retailers know the holiday is held in a slightly different regard than the sales spree that is, say, Presidents Day. Martin Luther King Day, Catmull said, "seems the wrong kind of holiday to commercialize."

Jeff Reeves, Editor of InvestorPlace.com

Finding cheap stocks to buy is no easy task in any market. But after a 30% run-up for stocks in 2013, many of the Promo Code cheap stocks have climbed so much that they are no longer so affordable.

But if you know where to look, you can still uncover cheap stocks to buy under $10 per share that hold significant upside in the new year. Sure, some of these cheap stocks are underperformers waiting for their turnaround. 700 BMW ActiveE Drivers Now On The Market - Some Asking For A Deal

Buy Cheap-700-bmw-active-e-drivers/bmw-activee/">

The BMW ActiveE two-year trial program in which 700 people got to learn and show what BMW ActiveE electric vehicles could do is coming to a close. A lot of the drivers, of course, want to keep driving electric, but they have to turn in their beautiful and high-performance BMW ActiveE vehicles within the coming weeks.

BMW is trying to funnel them into buying or leasing a BMW i3 or BMW i8, but there are a lot of electric cars on the market now. With ~700 happy electric vehicle drivers all of a sudden on the market, it really would be an excellent time for electric car manufacturers to try to woo them by offering a special short-term deal. That's exactly the pitch one BMW ActiveE member recently made over in the GM-Volt forum, specifically targeting Volt dealers. Forum member "Optimist" wrote:

New Volts needed by 700 BMW Active E drivers

All of the 700, BMW Active E drivers are reaching the end of their driving experience with BMW. Their cars must be returned almost immediately and certainly over/during the coming 60 days. The replacement vehicle that BMW would like these drivers to move into is the new i3, due here in May, 2014. Current drivers may extend their expiring lease until that date if they commit to a purchase of the i3. Many drivers express regret over losing the Active E, and are for many reasons less than impressed with the i3. These drivers have installed 240volt/30amp systems therefor they are ready to go. The Volt is a proven sophisticated option for this group so I invite General Motors/Chevrolet Dealers to pitch us a deal, NOW. There are 700 of us and most are in California!

I thought I'd help get the word out there for these guys and girls as well in order to give them a hand. Best of luck to them!

(Share the word to help these early adopters!)

Comings and Goings in the ever-changing market place

Now open: Elements Massage of Maple Valley in the Maple Valley Town Square; sears outlet Home Appliance Showroom in Covington (right next to the Covington Chamber office); Black Diamond Antique on Railroad Avenue; Yeti Yogurt, Subway, and Taco Del Mar between Johnsons Home & Garden and Grocery Outlet Bargain Market in Four Corner Square.

Coming very soon: Walgreens, Auto Zone and the new location of Maple Valley Eye Care Center - all of these freestanding building pads are in front of Johnsons and GOBM; Maple Valley Bar & Grill is slated to open in the former MultiCare location on the other side of Four Corner Square; and Valley Medical Center's new 10,000 square foot facility is being built right in front of Fred Meyer.

And no - there is no Trader Joe's or Olive Garden coming to town any time soon.

In a recent interview, I was asked about all the new growth and impact on local businesses. My response was with growth comes opportunity - and sometimes missed opportunity. I know that first-hand from owning our own business (Wilderness Auto Service & Chevron, now in the second generation of ownership) and surviving the many changes in our community over the last 39 years. We pumped more gas in the 90's than we do now. Growth doesn't always mean more business; often times it means less. More than once we had to redefine our core business to survive. Originally, it was a Standard gas station with lube bays; over the years it became auto service with Chevron gas and a food mart. Without changing our business model and responding to the new demands of the consumer, there was no way we would have ever survived the last few years.

I was also asked in the interview if change was a bad or good thing. My answer was it's neither - it's just different. This area has seen a change in demographics over the years - the population changed and with that came different consumer demands which affected most every business.

What we have lost over the years is some of that local 'flavor' and character. We used to have more owner-operated businesses - more uniqueness. Ralph's Thriftway in Wilderness Village, for example, is now QFC. Village Drug is now a Bartell's.

On the other hand, look at the opportunities for businesses located next to Fred Meyer in Maple Valley Town Square. It's hard to imagine that none of that existed two years ago. It's the same with the redeveloped Four Corner Square with Johnsons Home & Garden and Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. The new growth and development has spurred on new businesses and brought new life to surrounding existing businesses.

The bottom line is that the chamber cares about the health and well-being of all businesses - old and new, big and small. A lot of what we do is all about business retention. We have resources and the expertise to help a business even before their doors are open and long before they're really struggling. We are here to be a partner in building their business.
